Hatha Yoga is the yoga of physical postures, and is often used as an umbrella term
that includes specific practices like Iyengar and Ashtanga yoga. These days, hatha is most
often used to describe gentle, generic classes that don't adhere to any particular system.
A hatha class will likely be a slow-paced stretching class with some simple breathing
exercises and perhaps seated meditation. This is a good place to learn beginners' poses,
relaxation techniques, and become comfortable with yoga. The word "hatha" comes from the
Sanskrit "ha" meaning "sun" and "tha" meaning "moon". Hatha Yoga aims to unite and balance
pairs of opposites, especially the active, masculine (sun) and passive, feminine (moon)
aspects of the physical body, subtle body and mind.
